Life can change in an instant. Thirty-one years ago today, an accident altered the course of my existence forever. Reflecting on that moment and the years that followed reveals a path marked by denial, anger, and ultimately acceptance and embracing the things that I CAN do.
This journey has shaped who I am today, and I hope that sharing it will offer insight and encouragement to anyone facing their own challenges.
The Moment That Changed Everything
The accident happened suddenly, without warning. One moment, life was moving forward as usual; the next, everything was different. The physical impact was severe, but the emotional and mental shock was even greater. In those early days, confusion, disbelief and frustration were overwhelming.
It was hard to accept that my life had shifted so dramatically. Denial became a natural defence. I told myself this was temporary, that I would bounce back quickly. Friends and family offered support, but I often felt isolated in my struggle.
The Very L-o-n-g Road Through Denial and Resistance
Denial can be powerful - it protects us from pain but also delays healing. For years, I resisted fully acknowledging the mental and emotional changes in my body. I clung to old expectations, hoping to regain what was lost. This resistance created frustration and sometimes despair.
There were good days and bad days, moments of hope and moments of setback. I learned that healing is not straightforward or easy, but the key was to keep moving forward, and that small victories mattered: a new skill learned, a task completed independently, a moment of genuine happiness.
Finding Acceptance and Embracing What I CAN Do
Acceptance arrived very slowly. It took years! But gradually I began to accept that my life had changed. Accepting my new reality meant letting go of some dreams but also discovering new possibilities. I focused on what I could do rather than what I could not.
Embracing my abilities and acknowledging my limitations has transformed my outlook. I learned to celebrate progress, no matter how small. This mindset helped me build confidence and resilience.
Here are some strategies that helped me reclaim a sense of purpose and fulfillment:
Set realistic goals: Break down larger goals into manageable steps, and don't be afraid to pivot if things aren't working.
Seek support: Connect with others and allow people to help you.
Focus on strengths: Identify and build on what you CAN do.
Practice self-compassion: Be patient and kind to yourself.
Stay curious: Explore new places, people and pastimes that bring joy.
Life after a major change is not about returning to the past but creating a meaningful present and future.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on 31 years since the accident, I see a journey of transformation, a journey that has taught me resilience, patience, and the power of perspective. It reminds me that while we cannot control every event, we can control how we respond. Life’s challenges can lead to unexpected strengths and new directions.
For anyone facing a life-changing event or challenge, remember that healing takes time. Allow yourself to feel, to struggle, and to grow. Focus on what you can do today, and trust that each step forward builds a stronger you.
With much love
